Quang Tri province delegation attends the 47 session of World Heritage Committee

From July 5 to 17, a delegation of Quang Tri province led by Mr. Hoang Xuan Tan, Provincial Party Committee Member, Vice Chairman of Provincial People’s Committee attended the 47th session of World Heritage Committee (WHC 47), held in Paris (France). With the financial support from the Republic of Bulgaria, the WHC 47 is chaired by Prof. Nikolay Nenov (Bulgaria), Ms. Joelle Bucyana (Rwanda) as Secretary, and Vice-Chairs from Belgium, Mexico, Qatar, the Republic of Korea and Zambia, that was opened at 10:00 am, 6 July 2025, at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris.

The 47th session of the WHC holds special significance as the WHC will consider the nomination of around 30 new heritage pieces for inscription on the World Heritage List and the extension of two existing ones. Inparticular, the session will assess the conservation status of several World Heritage sites in Viet Nam such as Ha Long Bay, Thang Long Imperial Citadel, Trang An – Ninh Binh, Phong Nha – Ke Bang, etc. At the same time, the session considers the nomination dossier for the Yen Tu – Vinh Nghiem – Con Son and Kiep Bac relic and landscape complex as a World Heritage Site and consider inscribing Hin Nam No National Park, Laos as an extension of the World Heritage Site of Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park, Viet Nam. The session will introduce necessary measures to protect World Heritage Sites from negative impacts of climate change, human activities, and other factors.

During the working sessions, the delegation listened to reports from advisory agencies and the World Heritage Center, learned about new nomination dossiers, the process of reviewing endangered heritages, and updated guidelines for implementing the 1972 Convention, accessed information related to recommendations for world heritage sites in Viet Nam, and actively discussed to build new cooperation directions with international organizations to support management, conservation of the OUV of World Natural Heritage Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park in the next phase.

Quang Tri province’s active participation in the 47th UNESCO WHC session demonstrates its strong commitment to implementing UNESCO’s recommendations, while expanding opportunities for international cooperation in managing, preserving and promoting the values of the Heritage, affirming Phong Nha – Ke Bang’s position on the map of World Heritage woldwide./.
