Phong Nha Cave – The World’s Premier Water Cave Wonder

Phong Nha Cave is located in Phong Nha Commune, Quang Tri Province, approximately 50 km southeast of Dong Hoi City, With a total length of 7,729 meters, the cave features numerous large and small subsidiary branches. It is a water cave with an underground river flowing through the mountain, adorned with distinctive and magnificent stalactites and stalagmites.

In 1994, at the International Scientific Conference on Caves held in Hanoi, attended by leading Vietnamese and international scientists and cave experts, Phong Nha Cave was voted as one of the most beautiful water caves in the world based on seven outstanding criteria:
the longest water cave; the highest and widest cave entrance; the most beautiful underground lake; the widest and most beautiful dry cave; the most beautiful sandbanks and rock banks; the longest and most scenic underground river; and the most spectacular and magical stalactite system.

Phong Nha Cave is also famous for its unique limestone formations, named after their natural shapes such as “The Lion,” “The Unicorn,”, “The Royal Court,” and “The Buddha Statue.” The underground river flowing beneath the Truong Son Mountain Range emerges at the cave entrance, displaying a jade-green color during the dry season and a reddish hue in the rainy season.
